AED General Information

In the State of Washington (RCW 70.54.310) an individual or an entity which acquires a defibrillator shall ensure that:

• potential operators receive reasonable instruction in correct use of the defibrillator and CPR;
• the defibrillator is maintained and tested by the individual or the entity that acquired it;
• medical direction is sought by the purchaser from a licensed physician;
• the AED at a specific location is registered with the appropriate county Medical Program Director (registration is required in Washington State, although the AED manufacturer may not require it);
• if an AED is used, a call will be made to 911 as soon as possible, and follow-up data will be available upon request.

Anyone who uses an AED is immune from civil liability for personal injury that results from any act or omission in the use of the defibrillator in an emergency setting (RCW 70.54.310(3).

You are not immune from liability if the acts/omissions amount to gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct (RCW 70.54.310(4)
