  • Jeffrey Vaughan

    President/Executive Director

    Jeffrey is an occupational safety and health professional with 30 years’ experience in a variety of industries. Jeffrey has also managed teams of people throughout his career and has been responsible for multi-million dollar budgets, production facilities and high performance work teams. With regard to policy-making, Jeffrey has the unique experience of serving more than 15 years as a local elected official, visiting with legislators and agency representatives to help with public policy development and securing resources for municipal projects.

  • Sophie Merwick

    Operations Manager

    Sophie is the Operations Manager at Evergreen Safety Council. After graduating from Whitworth University with a BA in Business and Hospitality management, she honed her management skills working through the ranks of a local restaurant group. She enjoys developing systems and tools to help streamline operations and make them more efficient, finding creative solutions to problems, and building synergistic teams—all of which culminate in a strong workplace culture. Sophie is a lover of the great outdoors, and can often be found hiking, fly fishing, skiing, and enjoying life with her Australian Shepherd pup, Lolo. She also loves cooking for family and friends and cheering for the Seahawks.

  • Nara Hohensee

    Creative Services Supervisor

    Nara helps make Evergreen’s classes accessible and fun. She joined the team in 2019, bringing a background in higher education and a love for learning and technology.Nara is an art and architectural historian and likes to create videos about local urban history in her spare time. She also likes to write and play music with her partner, and go on adventures together with their two kids.

  • Tina Bacon

    Sr. Administrator & Trainer, Occupational Safety

    Since starting work for Evergreen Safety Council as a Roadway Programs Coordinator, in February 1996, Tina has worn many other hats, which has made her invaluable to the rest of the team.

    The programs she has managed include Work Zone Flagger and Traffic Control Supervisor for Idaho, Oregon and Washington as well as the Washington State Pilot/Escort Program. She was also the in-house graphic designer and lead project coordinator for all of Evergreen’s training materials.

    Her most recent role is that of a trainer and master instructor. She currently teaches Flagger, Pilot/Escort, EverSafe and First Aid & CPR courses.

  • Chan Lee

    Staff Accountant

    Chan joined our team in 2019. He graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s of Art degree in Accounting and Finance in 2016, and practiced his accounting in a tax accounting firm for two and a half years. He also served in the U.S. Army from 2008–2012.

    PROGRAM SPECIALIST

    Ana honed her customer service skills in high-paced retail establishments before joining Evergreen Safety Council as a customer service specialist. Now our occupational safety program specialist, Ana assists our students with class selection and registration, prepares course materials, and processes reports. Her expertise in customer relations really shows when she works to ensure that our customers have a pleasant and productive experience with our people and products. Ana has an associate’s degree in Business Administration from Edmonds Community College, and is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business at the University of Washington. She loves to travel, and has especially enjoyed the time she has spent in Costa Rica and Japan.

  • Ashley Kachmar

    RECORDS ADMINISTRATION SPECIALIST

    As our records department specialist for our health and safety programs, Ashley manages class registration paperwork, troubleshoots students’ technical issues, and assists with inventory and certification management. Her friendly, upbeat demeanor and attention to detail help ensure our customers have a great experience. She attends Edmonds Community College in pursuit of a Diagnostic Ultrasound degree. In her spare time she enjoys reading, traveling to new places, and spending time with her cat.

    Creative Services

    Tony is a marketing professional with a business degree from the University of Oregon and a minor in multimedia. Prior to joining the Evergreen Safety Council team, Tony worked for Nike and also as a video content creator on a popular YouTube channel with nearly 900,000 subscribers. Tony is at the center of our Council’s marketing efforts and has produced a number of videos and other multimedia assets for our website, social channels, and training classes.

    As Evergreen Safety Council’s in-house content creation specialist, Katie works with both the development and marketing teams. She draws on her years of experience in the journalism and trade publishing industries to tell Evergreen’s story in an appealing and engaging way. Outside of work, Katie enjoys writing, running, and hiking and traveling with her husband and two sons.

  • Sydney Freeman

    Customer Service and Fulfillment Specialist

    Sydney, our customer service and fulfillment specialist, brings five years of customer service experience to Evergreen Safety Council. She prepares class materials, tracks inventory and paperwork, and provides customer service for our motorcycle and occupational health and safety programs. She is currently studying Environmental Science at the University of Phoenix, and enjoys cooking, thrifting, and traveling. Sydney shares her home with her boyfriend, three cats, and a collection of succulents.

  • Michael Davis

    Motorcycle Safety Program Administrator

    Michael started his rider education career as an Evergreen instructor in 2000, and we are excited to welcome him back to the ESC family as our two- and three-wheel motorcycle program administrator. A lifetime rider and zealous advocate for safety education, Michael has served as technical specialist for the Washington Department of Licensing, senior instructor for military traffic safety training programs, operations manager for Oregon rider training, and manager in both the Missouri and Colorado state rider training programs. He has degrees in Psychology and Business from Seattle Pacific University, and recently earned his law enforcement motorcycle unit wings by completing the Police Motorcycle Operator training course.

    Momo is our motorcycle program’s technical specialist. After more than a decade in tech as a software engineer, Momo now lives out their passion working with motorcycles and educating others about them. When not teaching classes as an MSF-certified RiderCoach, Momo can be found managing Evergreen’s training facilities, motorcycles, and other equipment. Momo loves sharing their passion with others and is dedicated to making Evergreen a great place to learn how to ride safely.

    Customer Service and Fulfillment Specialist

    Yuliya joined ESC as our customer service specialist after taking one of our motorcycle training courses. Her previous experience in customer service for Amazon and as a caregiver for special needs clients has prepared her for this fast-paced, customer-facing role here at Evergreen Safety Council. Yuliya currently studies criminal justice, child advocacy, and early childhood education, and enjoys writing, art, and other creative pursuits in her spare time.

  • Stan W. McNaughton

    (Vice Chairman) President, PEMCO Insurance Co.

    A native of the Northwest, Stan grew up in Seattle, graduated from Seattle University and joined PEMCO in 1986. Prior to PEMCO, he held positions at Price Waterhouse and Everett’s Herald Newspaper where he served as corporate treasurer. He sets the standard for corporate citizenship, mentoring students and serving on boards focused on education, including Albers School of Business at Seattle University, Foster School of Business at University of Washington, Junior Achievement and Pacific Science Center. He also participates with safety organizations crucial to the Northwest community, including Northwest Insurance Council and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. He’s proud of his years of service in Seattle’s positive, forward-leaning and uniquely diverse community. Stan enjoys cycling, photography, snow skiing and scuba diving. In fact, he’s spent more than 2,000 hours underwater.

  • Jim Maltby

    Director HSSE, Lynden Inc.

    Jim has been with the Lynden since July 1991 and has been Lynden’s Corporate Director of HSSE since October 2011. His background includes 21 years as Director of HSSE for Alaska West Express Inc. His current duties include developing, implementing and enforcing Lynden’s Integrated Health, Safety, Security and Environmental programs and policies as well as assuring compliance with DOT, USCG, EPA, OSHA and applicable federal, state and local regulations.

    Jim has thirty (30) years of experience in hazardous materials emergency response. He is a Hazardous Material Emergency Response Specialist in highway and railroad transportation. He is an instructor of hazardous material emergency response, and hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, IATA/ICAO (air) and IMDG (water). For 15 years he was Chief for the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team, member of the Statewide Hazardous Material Working Group, Fairbanks Emergency Planning Committee (FEPC) and member of the State Emergency Response Commission. Jim was also former Chairman of the Alaska Trucking Association Safety Management Council and American Trucking Association Hazardous Material committee. Jim was appointed by the State of Alaska Governor to the State Emergency Response Commission for four consecutive terms. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Safety Council in 2012.

  • Chason J. Coelho

    PhD, CSP, CFI Senior Managing Scientist, Exponent

    A cognitive neuroscientist by training and consultant by profession, Dr. Coelho has applied his background to address mental and physical behavior in safety-related areas such as human error prevention, decision making, human reliability, safety in design, human-machine interfacing, warnings and labels, and ergonomics. He works in a variety of industries, including construction, oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, marine, mining, manufacturing, and utilities. This diverse experience is well-aligned with Evergreen Safety Council’s slate of occupational and motorcycle safety training programs.

    Dr. Coelho did his doctoral research at Pennsylvania State University after completing an internship at the University of Chicago and an undergraduate program in learning, memory, and cognition at UCLA. He holds a Certified Safety Professional designation from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, a Certified Fire Investigator designation from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, and a Safety Practice Certificate from Texas A&M University for advanced training in industrial hygiene, fire risk management, and other similar topics. He is also a volunteer firefighter, emergency medical technician, technical and confined space rescuer, vehicle extrication technician, and licensed motorcycle safety instructor.
