  • Jeffrey Vaughan

    President/Executive Director

    Jeffrey is an occupational safety and health professional with 30 years’ experience in a variety of industries. Jeffrey has also managed teams of people throughout his career and has been responsible for multi-million dollar budgets, production facilities and high performance work teams. With regard to policy-making, Jeffrey has the unique experience of serving more than 15 years as a local elected official, visiting with legislators and agency representatives to help with public policy development and securing resources for municipal projects.

  • Sophie Merwick

    Operations Manager

    Sophie is the Operations Manager at Evergreen Safety Council. After graduating from Whitworth University with a BA in Business and Hospitality management, she honed her management skills working through the ranks of a local restaurant group. She enjoys developing systems and tools to help streamline operations and make them more efficient, finding creative solutions to problems, and building synergistic teams—all of which culminate in a strong workplace culture. Sophie is a lover of the great outdoors, and can often be found hiking, fly fishing, skiing, and enjoying life with her Australian Shepherd pup, Lolo. She also loves cooking for family and friends and cheering for the Seahawks.

  • Clarey Maus

    Business Manager

    As business manager, Clarey Maus is responsible for leading her team in promoting our products and services across each of our customer facing business units. Clarey is adept at anticipating and meeting our customers’ expectations for program content, quality, and value. Clarey’s prior background in construction estimating, retail sales, and management have made her a valuable asset as a manager at Evergreen Safety Council.

    Clarey takes great pleasure in identifying new opportunities and in making sure our customers and members get what they need in short order. When Clarey isn’t helping make our world a safer place, you can find her applying her creative talents in interior decorating, crafts, and cooking. She knows how to throw a legit party, too.

  • Nara Hohensee

    Sr. Administrator, Curriculum Development

    Nara helps make Evergreen’s classes accessible and fun. She joined the team in 2019, bringing a background in higher education and a love for learning and technology.Nara is an art and architectural historian and likes to create videos about local urban history in her spare time. She also likes to write and play music with her partner, and go on adventures together with their two kids.

  • Rolf Vitous

    Sr. Administrator & Trainer, Motorcycle Program

    Rolf is Evergreen Motorcycle Safety’s senior administrator and trainer. A longtime rider, he’s been a motorcycle safety instructor for more than 17 years. When he’s not teaching others how to ride, he can often be found enjoying the sport on the roads or track, or hitting the trails with his wife in their SxS. Off the bike, he enjoys U.S. history and great conversations with friends over food and cigars.

  • Tina Bacon

    Sr. Administrator & Trainer, Occupational Safety

    Since starting work for Evergreen Safety Council as a Roadway Programs Coordinator, in February 1996, Tina has worn many other hats, which has made her invaluable to the rest of the team.

    The programs she has managed include Work Zone Flagger and Traffic Control Supervisor for Idaho, Oregon and Washington as well as the Washington State Pilot/Escort Program. She was also the in-house graphic designer and lead project coordinator for all of Evergreen’s training materials.

    Her most recent role is that of a trainer and master instructor. She currently teaches Flagger, Pilot/Escort, EverSafe and First Aid & CPR courses.

  • Chan Lee

    Staff Accountant

    Chan joined our team in 2019. He graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s of Art degree in Accounting and Finance in 2016, and practiced his accounting in a tax accounting firm for two and a half years. He also served in the U.S. Army from 2008–2012.

  • Stephanie Dyck

    Sr. Administrator, Records & Certification

    Stephanie started at Evergreen in February 1995. Throughout the years she has been responsible for many of the Council’s programs and now, as a Records and Certification Administrator, ensures the integrity and accuracy of our training and certification processes and records.

    Stephanie spends her free time volunteering with her local Girl Scouts and working on her family’s genealogy.

  • Ana Zavialova

    Specialist, Customer Service

    Ana is the friendly face and happy voice that our customers and friends have come to appreciate at Evergreen Safety Council. Prior to joining our team, Ana honed her customer service skills in high-paced retail establishments. Her expertise in customer relations really shows when she works to ensure that our customers have a pleasant and productive experience with our people and products. Ana has an associate’s degree in Business Administration from Edmonds Community College, and is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business at the University of Washington. She loves to travel, and has especially enjoyed the time she has spent in Costa Rica and Japan.

    Ashley is one of Evergreen’s friendly and upbeat customer service specialists who helps ensure our customers have a great experience. She attends Edmonds Community College in pursuit of a Diagnostic Ultrasound degree. In her spare time she enjoys reading, traveling to new places, and spending time with her cat.

  • Chris May

    Program Specialist

    Chris is Evergreen Safety Council’s in-house motorcycle mechanic and facilities manager, responsible for the ongoing care and upkeep of our fleet of 60+ bikes. He’s also one of our in-house motorcycle instructors, and handles site prep for classes across multiple locations. Chris’ first job in the industry was as a parking lot attendant at Bellevue Suzuki, where he eventually worked in parts sales and as a mechanic. He’s been riding motorcycles since the age of 13, and is an accomplished road racer on two and three wheels. A lifelong Washingtonian, Chris has also spent extensive time in Germany, where he enjoys visiting his extended family. He lives in the Seattle area with his family and three chocolate Labrador retrievers.

    Administrator, Marketing

    Tony is a marketing professional with a business degree from the University of Oregon and a minor in multimedia. Prior to joining the Evergreen Safety Council team, Tony worked for Nike and also as a video content creator on a popular YouTube channel with nearly 900,000 subscribers. Tony is at the center of our Council’s marketing efforts and has produced a number of videos and other multimedia assets for our website, social channels, and training classes.

    As Evergreen Safety Council’s in-house content creation specialist, Katie works with both the development and marketing teams. She draws on her years of experience in the journalism and trade publishing industries to tell Evergreen’s story in an appealing and engaging way. Outside of work, Katie enjoys writing, running, and hiking and traveling with her husband and two sons.

    Roadway Safety Instructor

    Steve has eight years experience with on and off the road traffic control work as well as three years site/safety and field supervisor experience. Along with two Associate’s Degrees, he is a Washington State Certified Flagger, Flagger Instructor, Traffic Control Supervisor, Safe Driving Instructor and Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator. More specifically he’s been a flagger instructor since 2008, Traffic Control Supervisor since 2007 and approved as a TCS Trainer under Evergreen Safety Council in 2012. He has in depth knowledge of road technical knowledge and concepts, and has experience writing and publishing weekly safety bulletins as well.

    Occupational Safety & Health Instructor

    George has been associated with Evergreen Safety Council for 20 years. A retired Deputy Chief/Training Officer with the City of Wenatchee Fire Dept, George has a wide variety of training in his background. This includes various courses from WISHA, CALOSHA and Nevada OSHA, Safety & Health Specialist Certification, EverSafe Driving Instructor, ASHI First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations from Washington State Patrol, Emergency Management Institute, FEMA, in Maryland; numerous classes and seminars from the fire service in Safety, Hazardous Materials, Inspections, Investigations, Blood Borne Pathogens, Training, Building Construction and Codes Work with WISHA Committee on various Fire Service Vertical Standards.

  • Stan W. McNaughton

    (Vice Chairman) President, PEMCO Insurance Co.

    A native of the Northwest, Stan grew up in Seattle, graduated from Seattle University and joined PEMCO in 1986. Prior to PEMCO, he held positions at Price Waterhouse and Everett’s Herald Newspaper where he served as corporate treasurer. He sets the standard for corporate citizenship, mentoring students and serving on boards focused on education, including Albers School of Business at Seattle University, Foster School of Business at University of Washington, Junior Achievement and Pacific Science Center. He also participates with safety organizations crucial to the Northwest community, including Northwest Insurance Council and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. He’s proud of his years of service in Seattle’s positive, forward-leaning and uniquely diverse community. Stan enjoys cycling, photography, snow skiing and scuba diving. In fact, he’s spent more than 2,000 hours underwater.

  • Rick Gleason

    University of Washington

    Rick Gleason has taught at the University of Washington for the last 20 years in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. He is also the Course Director the the UW Region X OSHA Training Center covering Washington, Alaska, Oregon and Idaho. Mr. Gleason previously worked for Federal OSHA and Washington State OSHA (L & I-DOSH) for 13 years. He has been a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) for over 30 years.

  • Jim Maltby

    Director HSSE, Lynden Inc.

    Jim has been with the Lynden since July 1991 and has been Lynden’s Corporate Director of HSSE since October 2011. His background includes 21 years as Director of HSSE for Alaska West Express Inc. His current duties include developing, implementing and enforcing Lynden’s Integrated Health, Safety, Security and Environmental programs and policies as well as assuring compliance with DOT, USCG, EPA, OSHA and applicable federal, state and local regulations.

    Jim has thirty (30) years of experience in hazardous materials emergency response. He is a Hazardous Material Emergency Response Specialist in highway and railroad transportation. He is an instructor of hazardous material emergency response, and hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, IATA/ICAO (air) and IMDG (water). For 15 years he was Chief for the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team, member of the Statewide Hazardous Material Working Group, Fairbanks Emergency Planning Committee (FEPC) and member of the State Emergency Response Commission. Jim was also former Chairman of the Alaska Trucking Association Safety Management Council and American Trucking Association Hazardous Material committee. Jim was appointed by the State of Alaska Governor to the State Emergency Response Commission for four consecutive terms. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Safety Council in 2012.
